MTV VMAs 2013.

Time is falling short tonight, so I won't be able to do up an entire post on the MTV VMAs red carpet. But the celebrities who showed up weren't much of a story to tell anyway so I'm just going to mention those who left an impression, good or bad.

As usual, Taylor Swift doesn't disappoint on the red carpet. Channeling old Hollywood glamour, the country singer showed up in a midnight blue figure-hugging dress by Herve Leger complete with wavy blonde locks. She looked polished with Lorraine Schwartz jewels lining her ears and wrist. Dark lips with strong eye make-up complements the look perfectly. I'll always love Taylor with bangs but I love a celeb more when she pulls surprises on the red carpet.

BFF Selena Gomez was in a matching blue dress, only her high side-slit number is by Atelier Versace (though I honestly thought she was gonna show up in Dolce & Gabbana again). The look is very mature, which I notice is mostly Selena's style of choice on the red carpet. The dress showed the right amount of skin, so it's very sexy in an elegant manner. I particularly liked that she chose emerald green earrings (by Lorraine Schwartz) to complete her look, with minimal eye make-up. Outstanding.

I am so glad these two girls are still the best of friends! Who's Justin Bieber anyway?

On the other hand, there were two other looks I really didn't like. (Oh, let's not forget Miley Cyrus in looks that are trashy, but I don't even want to talk about it.)

First, there's Sarah Hyland in Marchesa. The dress is frumpy, there's too much going on and it's not flattering the petite actress at all. I don't know which part of her dress to focus on, the gold part peeking out at the thigh area or the bodice - it's just an eye-full. And we haven't even talk about her hair yet. She looked old (and that's very different from mature), she needs a better pose and the whole look including her shoes and clutch is just old, old, old. Marchesa has hundreds of dresses which will be more fitting for a young girl like Sarah, why pick something that doesn't flatter you? Personally, this wouldn't be one of the dresses I'd pick from the label's Spring 2013 collection.

Then there's Holland Roden in a Naeem Khan Resort 2014 number. The whole pant-beneath-a-gown thing has been seen so much on the runway, there's something there. But Holland's dress was so wrinkled and she looked like she was having a hard time handling the dress alone since the train was a little floor-sweeping. The gown's material is too thick for someone short to be wearing it with the train dragging heavily behind or even to hold up while walking. It looked much better on the runway model. Besides I'm not buying the whole look that's taken off the runway. I didn't like the sleek pulled-back hairstyle and bold lip on her. We need originality to bring out the dress. Plus, the lighting on the red carpet doesn't give the dress the right color.

Outfits and red carpet aside, I was so blown away by Justin Timberlake's medley performance (please try to get a video of it if you can!) with guest appearance by his four former bandmates (scream!). JT is so smooth with his dance steps and such an amazing entertainer. I LOVE JT!
